Dragon Dice Battle Report #1: Dwarves vs Goblins

Game is being played with units from the kickers only plus regular terrains and dragons. Armies have been built from 4 kickers each.

The Dwarven Army

The Dwarves field a powerful cavalry force and a strong ranged section, with 2 mighty Rocs as backup to either. They choose two standard yellow/red terrains to maximise their species ability. They also select a red and yellow dragon but with no dedicated mages it’s unlikely they will come up.

The Goblin Army

The Goblins make the backbone of one force 2 formidable Trolls with some light melee and magic backup. The other main force is a mixture of cavalry and light melee. They choose a yellow/blue and green/blue terrain to maximise their Swamp Mastery and 2 black dragons as I’m out of yellow dragons.

Deployment: Ranged Dwarves and the Rocs to the Dwarf Home Army, Cavalry to the Dwarf Horde Army and a lone Crossbowman to the centre. Goblins deploy their cavalry to the Goblin Home Army and the Trolls and support to the Horde Army.

Dwarves and Goblins roll off their Horde Armies

With the Dwarves winning. Dwarves elect to go first, Goblins get their terrain in the middle. Terrains at 5, 5 and 6 promise a swift battle.

Dwarves Turn 1:

Step 1-3 are skipped.

Dwarves First March: Dwarves attempt to manoeuvre the terrain and are opposed.

Dwarves win 9-6 and move the terrain to a 4. Then fire.

Seize SAI targets a Troll, who rolls an unhelpful Regenerate and the Troll dies. Goblins then take 8 points of Ranged Damage and roll saves.

Getting 8 saves.

Dwarf Second March: Dwarves skip their manoeuvre and go straight to a melee attack.

Generating a shocking 16 melee.

Goblins save:

Getting 6 and taking 10 damage.

In Reserves Dwarves retreat a crossbowman.

Goblins Turn 2:

Steps 1-3 skipped

Goblins attempt to maneuvere at home and are opposed.

Lose 7-12

Goblins then try a Ranged Attack.

Getting 5 hits blocked by 7 saves.

For their second action Goblins tick up the Frontier Army terrain once. Then retreat almost everyone.

Dwarves Turn 2:

Feeling mostly unopposed.

Dwarves First March puts the Dwarven Horde Army to 7

Dwarves Second March puts the Dwarven Home Army to 5, then Ranged the lone Goblin on the board,

Killing him.

Reserves drops a crossbowman at the Home Terrain. And the pull back a third of their cavalry.

Goblin Turn 2

Goblin First March:

Activate Reserve Army

Magic Roll

Regenerate pulls back a troll and 9 magic puts down Stone Skin: 3 at the Dwarven Home and resurrects a single Goblin unit.

No Second March

Goblins redeploy.

Dwarven Turn 3:

Dwarf First March: Move Horde Army to side 8.

Cast Magic.

Cast Firey Weapon: 1 on the Home Army.

Dwarven Second March: Attempt to Maneuvere: Opposed

Dwarves win 6 to 1. (Made a mistake here, should have been Goblins win 7-6 because of Swamp Mastery)

Dwarven Action: Ranged Attack

Seize targets the Troll, who is killed.

14 damage to the Goblins, who save 6.

Dwarves reinforce back to their Home Army.

Goblins Turn 3:

Stone Skin Expires

Goblins First March

Goblins Ranged attack at their Horde Army

Getting no results:

Goblins Second March

Frontier Terrain to 7.

Reserve the Horde Army

Dwarven Turn 4:

Firey Weapon Expires

Terrain 8th Face does not trigger as there are no dead Dwarves

Dwarven First March

Horde Army Ranged Attack:

No Results

Dwarven Second March

Ticks up the terrain

Ranged Attack

Seize Targets the Troll who Regenerates back the other Troll.

Then 13 damage

Zero saves results in the Goblin army being wiped out.

Goblins concede at this point.

Tactical Report: Well that was a drubbing for the Goblins. Basically I think that came down to three things.

1)      The Dwarven pool from the kickers yielded a very strong cavalry force and a good ranged cohort. The Goblin pool despite two Trolls was more mixed. Would have been better with a stronger mage presence and a beefed up team with the Trolls.

2)      The initial rolls on the terrains suited the Dwarves perfectly and them all being earth neutralised Goblins advantage with Dwarven advantage.

3)      The Rocs were birds of the match. Splatting the Trolls every attack neutralised the Trolls resilience and their melee was often clutch on Earth terrain for keeping it exactly where the ranged wanted it.

Only my third game but I’m still enjoying this a lot and starting to figure out basic army composition.
